Most people would never place a banana in the same category as a blueberry or grape. Bananas are long, seedless-looking, and covered by a thick peel. They do not resemble the small, round fruits we normally call berries.
However, botanists classify bananas as berries.
Even more surprisingly, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are not true botanical berries. The reason lies in how each fruit develops from its flower—not in its size, shape, sweetness, or name.
What Is a Berry?
In everyday language, the word “berry” usually describes a small, juicy fruit. Botanical classification follows a different set of rules.
A botanical berry is a fleshy fruit that develops from the ovary of a single flower. Its inner ovary wall remains soft rather than forming a hard stone or pit. One or more seeds are normally contained inside the flesh.
Examples of botanical berries include:
- Bananas
- Grapes
- Tomatoes
- Blueberries
- Kiwifruit
- Eggplants
This means that a fruit does not have to be small or round to qualify as a berry. Its appearance and culinary use are less important than the flower structure from which it developed.
Why Is a Banana a Berry?
A banana develops from a flower containing an ovary. As the fruit grows, the ovary wall becomes the banana’s fleshy interior.
This developmental pattern meets the main botanical requirements of a berry. The banana is a simple, fleshy fruit produced from a flower’s ovary, and it does not contain a hard pit.
Wild bananas also contain numerous large, hard seeds. The bananas commonly sold in supermarkets are cultivated varieties whose seeds do not fully develop. The tiny dark specks visible inside a banana are remnants of those undeveloped seeds.

Why Isn’t a Strawberry a Berry?

The small dots covering the outside of a strawberry are also not ordinary seeds. Each dot is an individual dry fruit called an achene, and the actual seed is contained inside it.
Because one strawberry consists of many individual fruits attached to an enlarged receptacle, botanists classify it as an aggregate accessory fruit rather than a true berry.
In other words, the part that looks like the fruit is not the botanical fruit, while the parts that look like seeds are actually tiny fruits.
Raspberries and Blackberries Aren’t Berries Either
Raspberries and blackberries also fail the botanical berry test.
Each of their small, rounded sections is called a drupelet. Every drupelet develops from a separate ovary within one flower. These drupelets join together to create the fruit we eat.
For that reason, raspberries and blackberries are known as aggregate fruits—not true berries.
Their common names reflect everyday culinary language rather than scientific classification.
Culinary Names vs. Botanical Names
The confusion exists because cooks and botanists classify food differently.
In the kitchen, fruits are usually grouped according to flavor, appearance, and how they are eaten. Small, sweet fruits such as strawberries and raspberries are naturally called berries.
Botanists classify fruits according to their reproductive development and flower anatomy. Under this system, tomatoes and bananas can be berries even though they look completely different.
Neither system is wrong. They simply serve different purposes.
Other Surprising Botanical Berries
Bananas are not the only unexpected members of the berry family.
Tomatoes, grapes, eggplants, kiwifruit, and many types of peppers fit the basic botanical definition. Some related fruit categories, including citrus fruits and melons, are considered modified forms of berries with specialized outer layers.
Nature does not organize fruit according to grocery-store signs. It follows the structure of flowers and the way their ovaries develop.
